Overview
What is Neuro diversity?
The word neuro diversity refers to the diversity in intellectual functions or processes amongst individuals, but it is often used in the context of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), as well as other developmental or neurological conditions such as ADHD or Learning Disabilities.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
This is a serious developmental disorder that impairs the ability to communicate and interact. Autism spectrum disorder impacts the nervous system and affects the overall cognitive, emotional, social and physical health of the affected individual. The range and severity of symptoms can vary widely from person to person. Symptoms usually start before age three and can cause delays or problems in many different skills that develop from infancy to adulthood.
Key symptoms include-
- Avoiding eye contact
- Inappropriate social interaction
- Repetitive movements
- Repetition of words or actions
- Speech delay in a child
- Indifferent to external world
- Lack of flexibility to adopt change.
Autism Spectrum Disorder is not a single condition but a group of disorders that are all connected. It’s an umbrella term and below are the key disorders which fall under this spectrum.
- Autistic Disorder
- Asperger's syndrome
- Rett syndrome
- Childhood disintegrative disorder (CDD)
- Kanner’s syndrome
- Pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS)
ADHD
ADHD is one of the most common neuro developmental disorders of childhood. It often begins in childhood and can persist into adulthood. It may contribute to low self-esteem, troubled relationships and difficulty at school or work.
Key symptoms include-
- Aggression
- Hyperactivity
- Short Attention Span
- Mood Swings
- Tendency to act without thinking.
Learning Disability
Learning disabilities are neurologically based processing problems. Many children have trouble reading, writing, or performing other learning-related tasks at some point. This does not mean they have learning disabilities. A child with a learning disability often has several related signs, and they don’t go away or get better over time without right intervention. The signs of learning disabilities vary from person to person.
Key symptoms include-
- Problems reading and/or writing.
- Problems with math
- Problems paying attention.
- Problems being organized.
- Trouble following directions.
- Trouble telling time.
- Data Handling problems
How to remediate Neurodiverse Challenges?
Although certain anti-psychotic medicines may help reduce the symptoms to some extent but no cure exists for Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD or Learning Disability at this point and there is no one-size-fits-all treatment. However, therapies and specific lifestyles (diets, yoga, swimming etc.) can play a big role in reducing the non-conventional behaviours and improving the quality of life. The goal of treatment is to maximize the child’s ability to function by reducing the symptoms and supporting development and learning as per child’s need. Early intervention during the preschool years can help the child learn critical social, communication, functional and behavioral skills. Here in PURE HEARTS, we are providing the below services to help our students reach their maximum potential.
